Fresh from his TV triumph on the latest edition of irreverent BBC comedy current affairs quiz show ‘Have I Got News for You’, we are delighted to announce that journalist and broadcaster James O’Brien is to host the London Press Club Ball 2017.
James has come to prominence as host of LBC’s weekday morning phone-in programme, creating a sometimes humorous, sometimes combative (but always engaging) space for discussing current affairs and world events.
Some of his best known moments have become news in their own right, including a memorable interview with Nigel Farage, which Farage’s PR team cut short, and a dismantling of Amber Rudd’s immigration proposals which has been viewed 5 million times on social media.
James’ career in broadcasting and journalism spans more than two decades and includes a stint as showbusiness editor of the Daily Express, presenting various shows for the BBC and ITV and writing everywhere from the Daily Mirror to the Times Literary Supplement.
His Twitter account @mrjamesob quotes the Observer saying of him: ‘He is charm personified’. The Spectator describes him as a ‘spreader of Fake News’ while the New Statesman says he is ‘the conscience of liberal Britain’.
London Press Club Ball joint chairmen Robert Jobson and Ray Massey said:’ ‘We’re thrilled to secure such a hot talent at the top of his game to help out with a cause we know is close to his heart and to that of his family and their journalistic pedigree.’
His late father Jim O’Brien was a long-serving and award-winning journalist who worked for the Daily Telegraph and the Birmingham Post among others.
:: Remember to bid early and bid often in the London Press Club Ball auction raising vital funds for the Journalists’ Charity.
